| Schutzhund is a dog sport that was created in Germany in the early 1900's to test German Shepherd Dogs for their breed worthiness. It tested their character and abilty to work as they were intended, rather than evaluating the dogs appearance. Today the sport is enjoyed by many other working breeds, which include; Doberman Pinschers, Rottweilers, Schnauzers, Malenois, and Bouvieres. But the "King" of the Schutzhund Ring is still the German Shepherd Dog (GSD). Schutzhund is comprised of 3 events; Tracking, Obedience and Protection. There are 3 Schutzhund titles, and several specialty titles the dogs can achieve through judged competition. Schutzhund is a great family activity and is much more popular in Europe than here in the U.S. Once people understand this sport, they will walk away with a much different opinion about dog training and the potential most working breeds have. A properly trained schutzhund dog is much safer to have around, than an untrained dog of any breed. |
